Chapter 5

Blair passed the bowl of mashed potatoes to Lance, indicating for him to pass them on to his father, who accepted them with thanks. He did his best not to meet Blair’s eyes, but when he finally did, they were normal, as though she were a normal stepmother, he was a normal stepson, and this was a normal household. Lance took a gulp of his tea and let the bitter taste, sweetened by sugar, push the thoughts of the afternoon from his mind.

“So, what did you do today?” his father asked at last.

Lance found his throat tightening.

“Lance was a real gem,” Blair said. Lance looked to his father, who brightened.“He helped me with some photography I’ve been meaning to get done.”

“I’d really like to see some of your pictures some time.” His father speared some meat and carrots onto his fork.

“You know I’m shy with my pictures.” She grinned at his father, who gave her a mock-hurt look.“So my son gets to know what these pictures are, but I don’t.”

Blair giggled, and Lance focused on his food, hoping his dad would not notice his discomfort.

“I’m only teasing, you two,” his dad said at last.“I’m glad ya’llare getting along. People always say it’s hard to adjust to someone new in the household.”

Lance looked at his father and nodded.“Blair’s real easy to get along with, and she’s going to keep me busy with projects around the house this summer.”

Lance’s father smiled broadly.“Great. We need to get some stuff done.”

They continued their meal, peppering it with small talk. Lance slowly relaxed and thought about the busy day he was going to have tomorrow. As Blair said, she had some holes in the shower she was going to need filled.
